Some interpret Picnic at Hanging Rock as an allegory for the strict moral codes of a Victorian age in which sexuality was repressed, societal rules as well as regulations were vigorously enforced and class structure punctiliously observed.
Peter Weir's film of the book released in 1975 brilliantly captures its atmosphere and vividly depicts the oppressive fiery heat of that day in February at the turn of the last century. A critical and box office success in Australia and Europe, Weir’s film masterfully brings to life all the book’s hypnotic drama and tension leaving the audience with an ominous sense that the crack and fizzle of a hot Australian summer breathed life into a living, conscious and malevolent Hanging Rock.
