There’s a fundraising component to the event as well with each team expected to raise at least $1,000. However most teams that enter raise much more. In total over 2,000 people participate in each event, raising millions of dollars each year to help Oxfam Australia fund programs that make a positive difference to the lives of vulnerable people at home and overseas.
First place at the Sydney event in 2006 went to Sunhing Cosmoboys from Hong Kong, who finished the 100 kilometre course in 12 hours and 37 minutes. However the Nepalese Gurkhas hold the Australian record for the fastest ever finish time when they set a blistering pace to complete the 2005 Melbourne event in 11 hours and 27 minutes.
