The west coast town of Meulaboh in Aceh suffered terrible loss of life and physical destruction as a result of the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. Thousands lost their lives as three enormous waves pounded densely populated coastal areas, swallowing everything in their path from houses to fishing boats and schools. Children are among the most vulnerable following a humanitarian disaster. And that is why aid agencies such as Red Cross, Oxfam and the United Nations prioritise them for immediate assistance.
