Downtown Banda Aceh was washed away by the tsunami disaster in December 2004. Tens of thousands of people lost their lives and many more were left homeless with little access to clean water, food and shelter. Families whose houses survived the earthquake and tsunami sheltered those less fortunate. The children pictured above slept on the parlour floor of a large house three kilometres from Banda’s ‘ground zero’. Dozens of families found safe haven here in the days that followed the disaster.
