Located close to the geographical centre of Australia, Uluru is the world's largest monolith. Hundreds of millions of years old, the sandstone rock covers an area 3.3 kilometres square and is 9.4 kilometres around its base. At 340 metres high, it is taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris and New York’s Chrysler Building.

Uluru is a world icon but to the traditional Pitjantjatjara and Yankuntjatjara owners – collectively known as Anangu Aborigines – Uluru is a place of profound spiritual significance. In their language Uluru is a place name used for both the rock as well as the waterhole at its summit.

Climbing Uluru is deeply offensive to Anangu Aborigines and very much discouraged.
