Twelve kilometres east off the Kakadu Highway is Nawurlandja art site. Also known as Nourlangie, it is arguably Kakadu's best known collection of rock paintings. The site has been important to Aboriginal people for thousands of years.

According to local Aborigines, this outcrop of the Arnhem Land escarpment was shaped when two Creation Ancestors in the form of short-eared rock wallabies cut two crevices in the rock.
