Apnalaya – Mumbai slum dwellers

On a recent visit to India I partnered with Mumbai-based Apnalaya to profile their important work with Muslim slum dwellers in words and pictures.

Among the filthy conditions and poverty people manage to eke out a living. All the slums in Mumbai have thriving enterprises such as barber shops and roadside kiosks – it’s easy to forget slum dwellers are the engine of Mumbai's economy and society.

I wanted to capture in my photographs something of their enterprise and determination to live decent, dignified lives.

Photo essays appeared in The Big Issue and Eureka Street. All of my photographs were provided free of charge to Apnalaya to use to promote their work.
